The CBA’s Rural Education and Access to Lawyers will be holding the 2nd annual Regional Networking Event on the afternoon of Saturday, March 10 at River Rock Casino in Richmond. Room 158 The law school is honoured to have Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond as a guest speaker. She will speak to students about her unique career path and her current work as BC’s First Representative for Children and Youth. Ms. Turpel-Lafond has won numerous awards for her work. Before this position, Ms. Turpel-Lafond was an administrative judge in Saskatchewan and a professor at various Canadian law schools.

•Careers in Labour Law - Monday, March 7th, 12:00 p.m. - 1:20 p.m., Room 158 -- What does a career in labour law look like? The Collective Bargaining Process, from the negotiating of a collective agreement through to grieving violations of a contract, shapes the daily lives of millions of workers across the country. Almost one third of Canadian workers are in a unionized workplace and labour lawyers play a significant role in how their work experiences play out. Come hear speakers Jessica Asch (former BCGEU articling student and current in house counsel) Heather Raven (UVic Law’s associate dean), and Patricia Lane (Victoria Mediator) talk about the role labour lawyers play in this process and what careers in the labour law field are all about. Sarah Khan will be presenting a talk entitled “Practicing Public Interest Advocacy Law”, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on March 18, 2008 in Room 152. Her talk will address the practice of public interest advocacy law, and she will discuss PIAC’s Community Complaint to the Ombudsman, 2005 with respect to welfare rights. Sarah’s presentation is part of the Law 391 course in which students are studying how public interest advocacy law can be provided through community law offices. All are invited to attend this presentation. Sarah Khan is a staff lawyer with the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre. Her main areas of practice are anti-poverty litigation and regulatory law.
