R. Michael M'Gonigle

B.A. Honours (U.B.C.) 1969, M.Sc. (London School of Economics) 1970, LL.B. (Toronto) 1976, LL.M. (Yale) 1979, J.S.D. (Yale) 1982, called to the Bar of the District of Columbia, United States in 1980, and to the Bar of British Columbia in 1987.

Dr. M'Gonigle was cross-appointed to the Faculty of Law and the Department of Environmental Studies in 1995, and holds the Eco-Research Chair in Environmental Law and Policy. He has written widely on international law, environmental and resource management issues, and theories of ecological political economy. A co-founder of Greenpeace International, the Sierra Legal Defense Fund, and Smart Growth BC, Dr. M'Gonigle's research and teaching is currently focused on forestry and fish resource sectors, urban sustainability, and community-based governance.

He is the author or co-author of Forestopia: A Practical Guide to the New Forest Economy (1994); Nature, Production and Power: Towards an Ecological Political Economy (co-editor) (2000); Where There's a Way, There's a Will: Developing Sustainability Through the Community Ecosystem Trust (2001); Ecological Economics and Political Ecology: Towards a Necessary Synthesis ( in Ecological Economics, 1999); Fishing Around the Law: The Pacific Salmon Management System as a "Structural Infringement" of Aboriginal Rights (McGill Law Journal, 1999).
