Message from the Dean
Donna Greschner, Dean of Law
The UVic Faculty of Law has from its founding in 1974 been recognized for its commitments to academic excellence, innovative programming and a supportive learning environment.
The goal from the very beginning has been to foster a challenging, intellectually stimulating and rewarding academic culture in which students, in addition to receiving a superb legal education, would be encouraged to examine law from a broad societal perspective. The Faculty has always viewed law as a dynamic entity that can best be understood within the wider context of historical, social, economic and political developments.
The Faculty, while still adhering to these fundamental principles, continues to introduce vital new initiatives and enhancements to adapt to changing social circumstances, legal needs and student expectations. The result is a progressive and collaborative learning environment that fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation. UVic law students engage in a rigorous quest to understand the law in an atmosphere of profound respect for the beliefs and ideas of others.
This enduring legacy allows students to pursue individual educational and career goals under the guidance of exceptional professors, renowned scholars and supportive colleagues. This approach has earned UVic Law a reputation as one of Canada's finest law schools, providing a diverse range of law subjects and learning opportunities, including clinical and cooperative education programs. Our highly successful interdisciplinary graduate law program now attracts outstanding LL.M. and Ph.D. candidates from around the world.
Whether pursuing careers within the legal profession or applying their skills and knowledge in other fields, UVic Law graduates make immensely valuable contributions to the pursuit of economic, social and legal justice.
As Dean, I welcome your interest in the University of Victoria Faculty of Law and I encourage you to explore the many advantages it has to offer. We hope that the quality and depth of our programs will convince you to become part of UVic Law's proud tradition of excellence.
